.gop Announces launch date

Sunrise begins April 28 and General Availability launches July 7

Washington, D.C. – On Monday, April 28, 2014 trademark owners can officially apply for .gop domain names, the only web domain in history to be run by a political entity, during what is known as the Sunrise Period. The General Availability period, when the public has access to register domains will begin on July 7, 2014.

“The opening of Internet real estate enables the creation of an online community for all Republicans,” said Will Martinez, VP Sales and Marketing for .gop. “From grassroots organizations to blogs to candidates and official organizations, .gop is the place where conservative ideas and people belong online.”

In the lead up to general availability, interested parties can expect updates as elected officials, candidates, college groups, grassroots organizations, issue advocacy groups and others build their online presences in the .gop neighborhood. With one more tool in the digital toolbox, Republicans continue to roll out solutions to help the Party better organize online in the lead-up to the 2014 and 2016 election cycle.

A Sunrise Period is required by ICANN as a rights protection mechanism for trademark holders. During Sunrise, trademark holders have the ability to register exact match marks registered in the Trademark Clearinghouse as domain names through .gop accredited registrars. Dedicated to upholding the highest standards of management for its domain, .gop is committed to working with trademark holders to ensure they have the ability to seamlessly register their marks to ensure that they have carved out their own namespace with .gop.
